Multiple Teams · Cougars Take Sting out of Yellowjackets

The JV Cougars traveled to Detroit Country Day to face the perennial powerhouse Yellowjackets.  The weather didn’t cooperate early with attempts at offense by either team.  The Cougars finally struck first with 2:22 left in the 1st quarter on a strip by Noah Knippen and TD return by Sam Edwards to go up 6-0. Knippen and Michael Cherry seemingly spent the entire first half in the Yellowjacket backfield thwarting any real success by their offense.  At the 5:21 mark of the 2nd quarter Nate Biergans pulled in a DCD pass that had been deflected by Zach Gillespie and field position was ideal for the ensuing drive.  After a Zach Stone strike to Griffin Hotchkiss, two runs by Charlie Nylander lead to a 1 yd Gillespie plunge and LC lead 14-0.
The game remained that way until 10:32 remained in the 4th quarter when Nylander followed his blockers for a 7 yd TD run to expand the lead to 20-0.  A key fumble recovery by Cherry prior to the TD run kept the all important drive alive.
DCD scored on their next possession to decrease the lead to 20-8 and for a moment it appeared there may be a successful comeback.  That attempt was ended when Stone made the game saving interception at midfield and sealed the 20-8 victory.
The JV Cougars moved to 7-1 with their final contest a rematch against Mason Oct 19th.
