The JV Cougars moved to 3-0 with a resounding 40-7 victory over Eaton Rapids at Cougar Stadium. Things started poorly as Eaton Rapids moved the ball on their initial drive down to the LC 1 yard line using most of the 1st quarter clock. The defense then dashed the Greyhounds hopes with a forced fumble recovered by Sam Edwards. The quarter ended scoreless with neither team holding any momentum.
The second quarter seemed to favor LC early as a blocked punt gave the Cougars excellent field position. Unfortunately the drive ended at the 1 yard line with an ER fumble recovery and the game remained tied. The Cougar offense benefited from another defensive stop and at the 4:44 mark a 35yd Zach Gillespie pass to a streaking Sam Edwards tallied the games first points. Ryan Gilmore converted the extra point and that began a dominant 2 minute period that would see LC build a 20 point lead. The subsequent kickoff was a perfectly executed onside kick by Jacob Maloney which was snatched out of the air by Nathan Wilcox. On the sudden change, Gillespie found Griffin Hotchkiss for a 52 yard catch and run TD. Eaton Rapids tried on their next drive to put the ball in the air to find success after having none on the ground since the opening possession. That plan was halted by a Wilcox interception and the Cougars again found themselves with great field position. With 2:11 left in the half Nate Biergans, followed tremendous blocking for a 16 yard TD run and after another Gilmore XP, LC lead 20-0. Eaton Rapids showed heart and drove the length of the field for a TD right before halftime which ended 20-7.
LC started the 3rd quarter at their own 30 and Biergans broke free again basically untouched for a 70 yard TD run. The dominant performance by the offensive line of Mason Abbott, Michael Cherry, Noah Knippen, Jordan Kohler and Bronson Abbott opened holes for the running game and gave Gillespie time to throw all night. Charlie Nylander pushed the score to 33-7 with a 3rd run later in the 3rd quarter. The final score was a 58 yard punt return by Gillespie as he followed a wall of blocking into the end zone as the quarter expired. Gilmore kicked his 4th XP of the night and the final score was 40-7.
