The Lansing Catholic girls’ basketball teams all picked up impressive wins last week. The varsity girls defeated a very good Fowlerville team on the road on Friday 62-56. The night before, the Cougar JV team defeated Fowlerville 56-32, while the freshman team also beat the Gladiators 30-26.
The varsity Cougars had their best start of the year, connecting on an array of shots from the field in the first quarter to take a 23-16 lead after eight minutes. Lansing Catholic extended that lead to 39-23 at the break as they continued their torrid shooting pace. Fowlerville tried to get back in the game in the second half, cutting the Cougars lead to just nine, until Junior Steffi Kracko connected on a last second baseline jumper to move the Cougars lead back to double digits at 49-38 after three quarters. The Gladiators continued to chip away at Lansing Catholic’s lead in the final stanza, getting to within five on a few occasions, but key baskets by Junior Becka Poljan and Kracko held off Fowlerville and secured the Cougar’s important road win.
Poljan led the Cougars with 16 points, as Kracko added 15 and Junior Maggie Jacobs chipped in with 11. The win is the third in a row for Lansing Catholic, and moves their record to 6-4 on the year. The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they host a very good Lansing Waverly team.
In the JV game, the Cougars jumped out to a commanding 30-12 lead over Fowlerville at the half. But the Gladiators roared back to cut the lead to 9 in the third quarter. Lansing Catholic regained control in the fourth period, and coasted to the 24 point win. The Cougars were led in scoring by Freshman Sara English with 13 points. Freshman Maddy Jacobs added 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Freshman Rachel Bres contributed 10 points and nine boards for the winning team.
