The Lansing Catholic JV girls basketball team picked up a 54-19 win Thursday night at home against the Eaton Rapids Greyhounds. The Cougars led 14-4 after one period, but Eaton Rapids scored the first four points of the second quarter to close the gap to 14-8. Converting on a number of Eaton Rapid’s turnovers the rest of the first half, Lansing Catholic took a 30-12 lead into the halftime break. Maddie Jacobs led Lansing Catholic in scoring for the first 16 minutes with 12 points. Sophie Baldino added five.
The third quarter saw much of the same between the teams, as Catholic outscored their rival from Eaton County 15-5, on the way to a 45-14 advantage after three quarters. Sara English had eight in the quarter. Lansing Catholic continued to play well in the final stanza, and coasted to the 35 point victory.
Coach Brian English was pleased with his team’s efforts after having not played for a week. “The kids played well again tonight. I was worried about us being rusty, considering that we hadn’t played for a week, and with it being exam week. But I thought we did a lot of things well. We ran the break well. Played good 1-3-1 defense, and made the easy baskets.”
Jacobs and English paced the Cougars with 14 points a piece, while Baldino added seven. Rachel Reid had an impressive all around game with six points, six steals and five assists. Rachel Bres stuffed the stat sheet as well, with seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and five deflected passes. Jacobs finished with seven rebounds on the night.
The 5-0 Cougars are now off until January 3rd, when they host Carson City-Crystal.
