The Lansing Catholic girls JV basketball team continued its early season winning ways, with wins over Flint Powers Catholic and Williamston last week. This builds off of wins the previous week over Perry and Lansing Eastern and moves the JV girls to 4-0 on the season.
On Monday, December 5, the Cougars traveled to Flint to take on a strong Powers Catholic team. After leading for the first 25 minutes of the game, Lansing Catholic found itself in a back and forth contest in the final quarter. The teams traded leads the last two minutes of the game until Rachel Bres made two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to put the Cougars up for good. Two last second shots by Powers Catholic missed and the Cougars escaped with an impressive 36-34 win over the Chargers. Bres led Lansing Catholic in scoring with 12 points, followed by Sara English with 8 and Maddie Jacobs with 7.
Three nights later, the Cougars opened this season’s home schedule against league rival Williamston. Lansing Catholic struggled to get shots to fall in the first half, leading just 21-13 at the break. The Cougars came out strong in the third period to outscore the Hornets 17-1 behind an opportunistic pressing defense. The Cougars continued to play well for the remainder of the game, closing out the contest with a 48-20 win. Jacobs again led Lansing Catholic in scoring with 11, Hannah Hauser added nine and English chipped in with eight.
Cougar coach Brian English said the win was a team effort. “I thought all nine kids did something really well tonight. We were missing a lot of easy shots early, but the kids stayed focused and did the other little things well.”
Jacobs also added eight rebounds on the night, while Bres picked up nine steals. English added seven deflected passes and four steals, and sophomore Cara Heberlein added six deflected passes and five steals. Rachel Reid led the team with five assists on the night, Elaina Phelps added four steals and Sophie Baldino was three for four on two point shots.
Lansing Catholic takes on Olivet and Eaton Rapids this week to close out play before the Christmas break.
