Wednesday night the Cougars defeated rival Williamston again in 3 straight sets, ending 25-14, 25-18, and 25-23. This places LC in a dominating lead at 6-0 in conference matches, 2 games ahead of 2nd place Ionia (4-2). Next Monday’s results will have a strong affect on the contending teams.
Wednesday night’s first set started our very promising for the Cougars team, forcing the Hornets to call timeout at 5-0, and again at 9-1. The Cougars continued dominating through only 8 rotations before the set was over 25-14.
The 2nd set started off much like the first, with the Cougar defense commanding a 9-1 lead, and then again all the way to 15-3. However a long string of passing and blocking errors allowed Williamston to rally all the way back to 18-16. The Cougars then made a couple strong offensive plays and a few opponent errors landed the win for LC at 25-18.
The 3rd set proved even more chaotic as both sides pushed for survival. Williamston seemed to have a clear hold on the 3rd set at 14-19. Yet as it has become a theme of comeback games for LC, our tenacity was proven once again! The Cougar team rallied all the way back to a 25-23 victory.
Some notable stats on the night was Chloe Miller with 7 kills, Becca Poljan with 4 blocks, and Mary Beth Flores with 29 digs. Olivia Poupard also had a strong defensive night with 22 digs. Both Kasi Kirkpatrick and Ally Lasch had 13 assists each.
The JV and freshman teams had close battles in their matches, with the JV winning their match 2-1, and the Freshman team losing 1-2.
The Cougars JV plays a tournament at Parma Saturday and the varsity at St. John’s. All teams will play their next conference matches against Portland on Monday, away, and then again will play Fowlerville on Wednesday at Lansing Catholic.
It is also noted that depending on the other schools results, the Conference title could be undisputed (for LC) as early as Wednesday. If that happens, it could be the first time in Lansing Catholic history that we have won a Conference Title for volleyball! The team would like to thank everyone for their spectating support at the games, we have been overwhelmed particularly with the electric home crowds at LC this season!
