Lansing Catholic at Waverly

First Game

It’s baseball season; Waverly and Lansing Catholic have already played a few games, but this Saturday, it’s opening day for the Bleacher Denizen. It’s a nice, sunny day. Our Bleacher Denizen writes down opening lineups and rosters. For the first game the starting lineups are:

In the Lansing Catholic first inning, Riley Creamer hit a double to centerfield with two out, but was left on base.

Lansing Catholic Pitcher Nic Olson struck out all three Waverly hitters in the bottom of the first inning.

In the second inning for Lansing Catholic, Nic Olson hit a double to left field and went to third base on Nate Wolfe’s bunt single. They executed a double steal where Nate Wolfe got picked off first base. Nic Olson was able to beat the Waverly throw to home plate to score a run while Nate Wolfe got to second base. Waverly Pitcher Steven Janecki got Joel Collinson to line into a double play and struck out the final Lansing Catholic hitter. Lansing Catholic took a 1-0 lead.

Nic Olson got all three Waverly hitters out in the bottom of the second inning. He struck out two of them.

In the top of the third inning, Jon Koval led off and reached first base on an error. Steven Janecki got the next three hitters on two infield grounders and a popup.

In the bottom of the third inning, Steven Janecki reached first on an error with one out. Courtesy Runner David Sturdevant stole second base. However Nic Olson struck out the next hitter and got the third out on a popup to keep Waverly from scoring. After three innings, Lansing Catholic led 1-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, Max Zemke led off with a double for Lansing Catholic. Nic Olson singled him home. Olson advanced to second base on a balk. Steven Janecki was able to get the next hitter on a bouncer to first base; Nic Olson moved up to third base on the play. Joel Collinson flied out to left field. Jared Andrews made a fine throw home to catch the runner trying to score from third base to end the inning. In the middle of the fourth inning, Lansing Catholic took a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lucas Leak reached first base on a one out error and advanced to second base on a balk. Travis Wesley doubled him home. Nic Olson got the last two hitters on two infield grounder. After four innings, Lansing Catholic led 2-1.

In the fifth inning, Ryan Paul led off with an infield single and stole second base. He advanced to third base on Jon Koval’s grounder to second base. Jake Szombati’s sharp grounder took a bad hop in front of the Waverly second baseman and went into the outfield for a run scoring double. Rob Ruiter reached first base on an error. Riley Creamer’s line drive single to right field scored Jake Szombati and sent Rob Ruiter to third base. Rob Ruiter scored on Max Zemke’s infield grounder. Lansing Catholic made the third out on a fly ball to left field.

In the bottom of the fifth, Steven Janecki reached first base on an error, but the Courtesy Runner was erased when Cody Doatsman lined into a double play. After five innings, Lansing Catholic led by a 5-1 score.

In the top of the sixth inning, Lansing Catholic loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Nate Wolfe, Joel Collinson and Ryan Paul. However, Waverly Pitcher Steven Janecki struck out the next hitter, got the next hitter to ground back to him for a force play at home plate and got the third out on a ground ball to first base. This was a fine performance to keep Lansing Catholic from scoring!

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nic Olson retired all three Waverly hitters. Ryan Paul made a fine throw from third base to get the third out.

After six innings, the Lansing Catholic lead was still 5-1.

Lansing Catholic threatened again in the seventh inning. Riley Creamer got a leadoff infield single. He was forced at second base, but Nic Olson followed with a double to give Lansing Catholic runners at second and third base with just one out. Steven Janecki got the next hitter to bounce a grounder to him. He did a fine job of making sure the runner on third could not score and got the hitter at first base. Zach Daniels came in to get the final out on a popup to third base.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, A.J. Puente drew a one out walk, but was stranded at first base when Nic Olson got the last two hitters on a strikeout and a liner to right field.

Lansing Catholic beat Waverly 5-1 in the first game.

For Waverly, Travis Wesley had a double for the only Waverly hit and drove in Waverly’s run. A.J. Puente also drew a walk.

Steven Janecki pitched nearly the entire game and showed a lot of poise pitching out of a couple late inning jams.

For Lansing Catholic, Nic Olson pitched the complete game. With his bat, he contributed two doubles and a single as well as an RBI. Riley Creamer had a double, two singles and an RBI. Jake Szombati and Max Zemke each had a double and one RBI. Nate Wolfe and Ryan Paul had two singles each. Joel Collinson had a single. Nic Olson and Nate Wolfe also teamed up for a double steal that led to a run for Lansing Catholic.

For Lansing Catholic, in the top of the first inning, Jake Szombati led off with a walk. Rob Ruiter grounded a single to shortstop. Riley Creamer lined a single to left field to score Jake Szombati. The next hitter popped up. Nic Olson reached second base on an error; Rob Ruiter and Riley Creamer both scored on the play. Nate Wolf singled on a squib that only got a few feet from the plate. Drew Pence lined a single to score Nic Olson. Ryan Paul singled to drive home Nate Wolf. Ian Gorgenson hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Drew Pence. Waverly got the third out on a fly to center field. Lansing Catholic scored six runs.

In the bottom of the first inning, Waverly got one run back when Alex Archambeault walked with one out and stole second base. He advanced to third base on Lucas Leak’s grounder to second base. Travis Wesley hit a sharp single to right field to drive Archambault home.

After one inning Lansing Catholic led 6-1.

In the second inning, Rob Ruiter reached first base on an error. Riley Creamer doubled Ruiter to third. Max Zemke walked to load the bases. Nick Olson hit a fly ball to center; Jared Andrews made a strong throw from center field to keep Ruiter from scoring from third. Nate Wolfe singled to right field to drive home Rob Ruiter and Riley Creamer. Max Zemke scored on Drew Pence’s grounder to second base. Waverly got the third out on a popup to first base.

Lansing Catholic Pitcher Max Zemke retired Waverly in order with two strikeouts and a popup to first base in the bottom of the second inning.

After two innings, Lansing Catholic led 9-1.

In the top of the third, Jake Szombati singled to centerfield with one out. Connor Rucinski was safe on an error. Riley Creamer ripped a single down the right field line to drive Jake Szombati home. After Riley Creamer stole second base, Max Zemke doubled to drive home Connor Rucinski and Riley Creamer. Nic Olson lined a single up the middle to score Max Zemke. Nate Wolfe doubled to drive home Nic Olson. Drew Pence singled Nate Wolfe to third base. Nate Wolfe scored and Drew Pence moved up to second on a wild pitch. After Mitch McInnis advanced Drew Pence to third base on a grounder to first, John Derry drove him home with an infield hit. Waverly got the third out on a ground ball to second base. Lansing Catholic scored seven runs.

In the Waverly half of the inning, Cody Doatsman was safe on an error to lead off the inning and Joe Schwartz walked to advance him to second base. Alex Archambeault singled to drive Cody Doatsman in. After a ground out to second base, Travis Wesley walked to load the bases. The next hitter grounded to shortstop for an inning-ending double play.

After three innings Lansing Catholic led 16-2.

In the top of the fourth, Evan Hanes singled with one out, advanced to third on Nic Olson’s double and scored on Nate Wolfe’s single.

Jorge Contreras and Cody Doatsman singled in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Waverly was not able to score.

Lansing Catholic led 17-2 after four innings and won the game because of the mercy rule.

For Waverly, Alex Archambeault led the offense with a single, a walk and an RBI. Cody Doatsman and Jorge Contreras each added a single and Joe Schwartz contributed a base on balls to the Waverly cause.

For Lansing Catholic, Nate Wolf had a double, three singles and two RBIs. Riley Creamer had a double, two singles and two RBIs. Nic Olson had a single, a double and two RBIs. Max Zemke had a double, a walk and two RBIs. Ryan Paul and John Derry each contributed a single and one RBI. Jake Szombati had a walk and a single. Evan Hanes and Rob Ruiter each contributed a single. Ian Gorgenson had a sacrifice fly for one RBI.
