Holt at Lansing Catholic

March 5, 2015

Tonight, Holt and Lansing Catholic will play their final regular season game. Holt is 8-10 this year, but they only have one senior on the team and they lost two starting guards for a while during the middle of the season.

Jaron Faulds is 6’ 9” and a fine defender near the basket and a good rebounder. He also has various post moves and can shoot near the basket with either hand. He is a sophomore this year. Trent Stone is a tough minded guard who is a good defender and a really creative scorer on drives to the basket.

Jaylen Cooper, one of the injured guards, is a fine outside shooter and an athletic defender, who just came back from his injury in the previous game. Drew Stavischeck is an extremely good defender; he has also become a threat from the three point line.

Vontrell Jackson, the other guard who was injured is extremely quick and determined. Despite being only 5’ 6”, it is not unusual to see him driving to the basket. He is another quick, determined Holt defender. Quinton Armstrong joined the team at mid-season. He is 6’ 5” and usually gets around ten points a game on layups and putbacks.

Lansing Catholic finished in a tie for first in their league and has an 11-8 record. They have two of the top scorers in the area. Matthew Fata is a 6’ 0” senior point guard in his third year as a starter. He averages 20.2 points per game and is one of the assist leaders in the area. He is a strong three point shooter, but is really courageous and effective on drives to the basket, too.

Tony Poljan is a 6’ 8” junior who is an all-state quarterback in football. He is also in his third year as a starter. Last year, he was a shooting guard, but this year, the team needs him inside. He scores 17 points per game and is also a leading rebounder in the area.

Robert Mothersell and Michael Korrey have stepped up recently as scorers. Owen Rush is the fifth starter. He is a good ball-handler who can hit a three point shot if he is left open.

Steve VanKirk, one of the assistant JV coaches, who has helped the Bleacher Denizen a great deal in writing up football games, pointed out that the JV team beat two Class A teams this week. Earlier this week, they beat East Lansing and earlier tonight, they beat Holt to give them a 14-5 record. Tonight, Chuck Plaehn led them in scoring with 15 points.

The JVs disappointed the Bleacher Denizen in a small way in the first half. They got to within about 90 seconds of half time before they committed their first foul. Alas, if they had only gotten to halftime, The Bleacher Denizen could have made a silly joke about them giving up fouling for Lent. Sadly, now the Bleacher Denizen will have to look elsewhere for a scrap of humor some place.

Now that the Bleacher Denizen has had time to recover emotionally from his lost joke, he would like to officially congratulate the Lansing Catholic JV team and Head Coach Eric Trojanowicz on an excellent season!

It is now time for the Bleacher Denizen to begin recording tonight’s proceedings from the unique perspective of someone who has never been able to escape church league!
